Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, announced the passage of four bipartisan bills under suspensions of the rules, including measures to promote housing production and honor iconic figures like Shirley Chisholm, Roberto Clemente, and Holocaust heroes.
This is a procedure often used on the House floor to act expeditiously on legislation that is generally non-controversial. Next, these bills will await a vote in the Senate.
H.R. 1088, Shirley Chisholm Congressional Gold Medal Act, is a bill led by Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) that provides for the posthumous presentation of a Congressional Gold Medal in commemoration of Shirley Chisholm, in recognition of her activism and groundbreaking achievements in politics, including election as the first African American woman in Congress.
H.R. 6751 – Roberto Clemente Commemorative Coin Act, is a bill led by Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) that would direct the Treasury to mint and issue coins in recognition of the life of Roberto Clemente, baseball player and human rights activist, with proceeds going to the Roberto Clemente Foundation.
S. 91 – Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust Congressional Gold Medal Act, is a bill led by Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) that provides for the award of a Congressional Gold Medal to 60 diplomats posthumously in recognition of their brave and vital service of saving Jewish people during World War II.
H.R. 7480 – Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act, is a bill led by Representative De La Cruz (R-TX) that would amend the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 to exclude veterans’ service-connected disability income for the purposes of determining household income eligibility under CDBG. This bill would also require the GAO to issue a report to identify other HUD programs that consider veteran disability compensation for income eligibility purposes, whether there are inconsistencies across HUD programs, and to provide legislative recommendations for how HUD programs can better serve veterans and underserved communities.
