Waters Announces May Committee Schedule

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, announced the following schedule for the month of May:

  • May 4 at 12:00 PM ET: The Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development and Insurance will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Built to Last: Examining Housing Resilience in the Face of Climate Change.” 

  • May 6 at 12:00 PM ET: The full Committee will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Game Stopped? Who Wins and Loses When Short Sellers, Social Media, and Retail Investors Collide, Part III.”

  • May 7 at 12:00 PM ET: The Task Force on Artificial Intelligence will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Equitable Algorithms: How Human-Centered AI Can Address Systemic Racism and Racial Justice in Housing and Financial Services.”

  • May 12 at 10:00 AM ET: The full Committee will convene for a hybrid markup.

  • May 18 at 10:00 AM ET: The Subcommittee on National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Examining Belt and Road: The Lending Practices of the People’s Republic of China and Impact on the International Debt Architecture.”

  • May 19 at 10:00 AM ET: The full Committee will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, "Oversight of Prudential Regulators: Ensuring the Safety, Soundness, Diversity, and Accountability of Depository Institutions."

  • May 24 at 12:00 PM ET: The Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Going Public: SPACs, Direct Listings, Public Offerings, and the Need for Investor Protections.”

  • May 25 at 12:00 PM ET: The Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “The Legacy of George Floyd: An Examination of Financial Services Industry Commitments to Economic and Racial Justice.”

  • May 26 at 12:00 PM ET: The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Consumer Credit Reporting: Assessing Accuracy and Compliance.”

  • May 27 at 12:00 PM ET: The full Committee will convene for a virtual hearing entitled, “Holding Megabanks Accountable: An Update on Banking Practices, Programs and Policies.”

Waters Announces Witnesses for Third Committee Hearing on Market Volatility

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, announced the following witnesses for the May 6 full committee virtual hearing entitled: “Game Stopped? Who Wins and Loses When Short Sellers, Social Media, and Retail Investors Collide, Part III.”

  • The Honorable Gary Gensler, Chairman, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

  • Michael Bodson, President and Chief Executive Officer, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation

  • Robert Cook, President and Chief Executive Officer, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc

The virtual hearing will be held on May 6 at 12:00 PM ET.

On February 18, Chairwoman Waters held the Committee’s first hearing on market volatility involving GameStop and other stocks, with testimony from the CEOs of Robinhood, Citadel, Melvin Capital, Reddit, and retail investor Keith Gill.

On March 17, Chairwoman Waters held a second hearing on market volatility involving GameStop and other stocks to hear from experts and investor advocates regarding regulatory gaps illuminated by these events, and to assess possible legislative steps to protect investors.

For virtual hearings, all Members and witnesses participate remotely with no in-person participation in the hearing room.

Waters Applauds HUD’s Withdrawal of Trump Administration Rule that Weakened Fair Housing Protections for LGBTQ+ Community

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s reversal of the Trump Administration’s attempt to weaken the Equal Access Rule.

“I am pleased that Secretary Fudge has reversed the previous administration’s efforts that would have gutted the Equal Access Rule,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Under President Obama, HUD instituted these rules to strengthen provisions of the Fair Housing Act and ensure individuals have equal access to services, benefits, and shelter provided through HUD programs, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. In March of 2017, the Trump Administration undermined that rule by rescinding a Federal Register Notice that would have required owners and operators of HUD-funded homeless shelters to inform individuals of their rights. The Trump Administration worked tirelessly to dismantle and undermine protections like the Equal Access Rule, sending a clear message to industry actors and housing providers that the administration had no plans to take violations seriously. When the pandemic hit, the Trump Administration left millions of families with weakened fair housing protections meant to help the very people struggling the most during COVID-19, including people of color, immigrant communities, people with disabilities, and others…”
