Congresswoman Maxine Waters Calls on Chair Hill to Hold Emergency Housing Hearing with Secretary Turner

Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, sent a letter to Chairman French Hill (R-AR), requesting an emergency hearing with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Secretary Scott Turner, following the Trump Administration’s plans to decimate HUD staff and programs.

In the letter, Congresswoman Waters raises serious concerns about the implications of sudden and reckless firing of HUD staff by Secretary Turner, President Trump, and his unelected co-President Elon Musk. Waters warns that these actions will exacerbate the nation’s housing and homelessness crisis, disrupt the broader mortgage and real estate industries, and undermine key protections against housing discrimination.

“Given the widely reported mass firings of employees at the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (HUD) who manage or oversee critical federal programs related to ending homelessness, providing rental assistance, and supporting homeownership, I write to request that you immediately schedule a hearing with HUD Secretary Scott Turner so that the Committee can fully understand the impact of these actions on our nation’s worsening affordable housing and homelessness crisis,” wrote Congresswoman Waters. “...The Committee should be afforded the opportunity to investigate what is happening before irreparable harm is done to our economy.”
