Waters Statement on Terrorism Risk Insurance Act

Today on the House Floor, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, criticized House Republican leadership and committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) for a bad faith negotiation on the renewal of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA).

Waters, a strong supporter of TRIA, objected to the troubling process by which unrelated legislation making changes to the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform Act was inserted into the TRIA renewal at the eleventh hour. After laying out her objections, Waters supported the legislation.

“What I say is this: we should know and understand exactly how the process works, what is being done, and why it is being done. We should have a clean bill, with nothing else in it. If we want to debate Dodd-Frank, let’s not slip provisions in at the eleventh hour – at a time when our backs are up against the wall, at a time when they are closing down this session. That’s what I’m opposed to.
