This week, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, joined Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and House and Senate Democrats at a press conference condemning President Trump's abrupt, last-minute decision to abandon the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. The landmark legislation, which passed both the House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support and was scheduled to be signed into law this week, would have represented the most significant federal housing investment and reform package in more than three decades.
Also in attendance were House Financial Services Committee Democrats Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), Ranking Member of the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, Reps. Brad Sherman (D-CA), Stephen Lynch (D-MA), Al Green (D-TX), Bill Foster (D-IL), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Juan Vargas (D-CA), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), Rashida Tlaib, (D-MI), Nikema Williams (D-GA), Brittany Pettersen (D-CO), and Janelle Bynum (D-OR) alongside Senate Democrats and housing advocates from across the country.
Throughout the press conference the lawmakers highlighted that the legislation was the product of months of bipartisan negotiations and overwhelming support from Members who recognized the urgent need to address the nation's housing affordability crisis. Ranking Member Waters also praised the leadership of Senator Warren and Chairman Hill in getting the bill across the finish line.
The legislation would expand affordable housing, increase opportunities for homeownership, support rural and underserved communities, lower manufactured housing construction costs, strengthen consumer protections, and help reduce housing costs for families across the country. The lawmakers emphasized that while Congress did its job and delivered a bipartisan housing package, President Trump once again chose political gamesmanship over meaningful solutions for the American people.
The lawmakers concluded by demanding President Trump to immediately sign the bipartisan, bicameral legislation and reaffirmed their commitment to continue fighting to address the nation's housing affordability crisis and deliver relief to families across America.
