This week, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, held a press conference outside the Supreme Court of the United States ahead of oral arguments in the case involving Federal Reserve Board Governor Cook and the Trump Administration. Waters was joined by Reps. Sean Casten (D-IL), Vice Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services; Juan Vargas (D-CA), Ranking Member of the Task Force on Monetary Policy, Treasury Market Resilience, and Economic Prosperity; Al Green (D-TX), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations; Bill Foster (D-IL), Ranking Member on Financial Institutions Subcommittee; Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on National Security, Illicit Finance, and International Financial Institutions; Sylvia Garcia (D-TX); Sam Liccardo (D-CA) and Janelle Bynum (D-OR), along with Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward, and Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, President of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.
During the press conference, Ranking Member Waters expressed strong support for Governor Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, who has been targeted by the Trump Administration, with Trump himself attempting to fire her. Waters warned that Donald Trump’s unlawful effort to remove Governor Cook represents a dangerous attack on both the independence of the Federal Reserve and the rule of law.
The Lawmakers also sounded the alarm on Donald Trump and his Administration’s escalating assault on the Federal Reserve. After months of threats, insults, and intimidation directed at Federal Reserve officials, these attacks intensified last week when Trump’s Department of Justice began targeting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
The press conference concluded with Ranking Member Waters and House Democrats calling on the Supreme Court to uphold the rule of law, reject Trump’s unconstitutional power grab, and protect the independence of the Federal Reserve which is critical to the stability of the U.S. economy and the financial security of Americans, businesses and communities across the nation.
