ICYMI: Ranking Member Waters Leads Committee Democrats in Meeting with IMF to Discuss Promoting Global Economic Stability

  

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, led a delegation of Committee Democrats, including Representatives Al Green (D-TX), Bill Foster (D-IL), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), and Sean Casten (D-IL), in a meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The meeting focused on how the IMF is fulfilling its core mandates to promote economic and financial stability and provide policy advice and capacity development support to help countries build and maintain strong economies.

During the meeting, Congresswoman Waters emphasized how the IMF has worked to assist Caribbean countries and uphold the goals of Committee Democrats to promote economic prosperity. Managing Director Georgieva and Committee Democrats also discussed:

  • The IMF’s record-level lending to help low-income countries which was enhanced by Congresswoman Waters’ push for legislation to support the IMF;
  • The IMF’s efforts to combat predatory bilateral lending and corruption;
  • The urgent need to ensure that the IMF is equipped to address climate change to secure a safe and sustainable future;
  • Congressional authorization to increase funding for the IMF to further its mission;
  • Reforming the IMF surcharge policy, as proposed by Rep Beatty's bill, H.R 7902.

This meeting marks one of a series of visits to agencies and institutions that Ranking Member Waters has led this Congress, including to the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, and the World Bank. This latest visit to the IMF underscores the commitment of Committee Democrats to support the organization’s mission to promote financial stability across the globe.
