Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, led Committee Democrats on a visit to the World Bank to meet with President Ajay Banga. The group included Representatives Al Green (TX), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Juan Vargas (D-CA), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), and Sean Casten (D-IL).
During the meeting, Committee Democrats and President Banga discussed the following:
International Development Association and Haiti. Committee Democrats discussed with President Banga the work that the International Development Association is doing to help countries around the world dealing with fragility and violence, such as in Haiti.
The World Bank and China. Committee Democrats discussed with President Banga China’s current role in the organization, and the status and purpose of World Bank financing in China.
Twenty-first replenishment of the International Development Association. Committee Democrats and President Banga discussed how important the 21st replenishment of the International Development Association is for developing countries around the world, with a focus on those in Africa and how such funds can be leveraged to provide maximum impact to recipient countries.
The World Bank and Immigration. Committee Democrats discussed with President Banga the role the World Bank can play to improve the governance, economies and employment opportunities in vulnerable countries around the world so that people are able to live safely and stably in their home countries.
LBGTQ+ Rights. Committee Democrats and President Banga discussed how the World Bank should engage in countries violating the rights of their sexual and gender minority populations.
