Waters Applauds Gary Gensler’s Confirmation as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission

Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, released the following statement on the confirmation of Gary Gensler as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“I congratulate Gary Gensler on his confirmation as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

“Gary Gensler has a proven track record as a tough regulator on Wall Street. His leadership as Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and efforts to implement the Dodd-Frank legislation were instrumental for financial reform. Chairman Gensler’s leadership is exactly what the Biden Administration needs at the SEC to rein in predatory practices by abusive private equity firms, hedge funds, and other bad actors.

“As Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, I look forward to working closely with Chairman Gensler on ensuring investor protections, undoing the damage by the Trump Administration, reining in Wall Street, and making sure that the SEC is empowered to protect America’s investors.”

“I would also like to thank Acting Chair Allison Herren Lee for her leadership. Acting Chair Lee has accomplished a great deal during her tenure. She has taken steps to move us closer to effective and informative climate change disclosures by requesting public comment on climate risks. Acting Chair Lee has also taken steps to ensure that the SEC would no longer consider settlements conditioned on waivers. As Acting Chair Lee returns to her role as Commissioner, I look forward to her continued efforts championing investor rights.”
