Waters Reacts to New Report on Diversity at Consumer Bureau

Ranking Member led Committee Democrats in requesting report

Following the release of a report she requested, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee, reacted to findings related to diversity and inclusion at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Last year, Waters led eight other Democratic members of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations in requesting reports by Inspectors General at the CFPB and all other financial regulators, to assess whether any personnel practices and policies have created an unfair or discriminatory workplace for minorities and women employees.

Waters underscored the importance of supporting diversity at all of the federal financial regulators and not just the CFPB, which has been a perennial target of House Republicans. She also announced that in the coming months, she will release a report analyzing the diversity and inclusion practices of the agencies under the Committee’s jurisdiction.

She released the following statement.

“Democrats requested this report from the Inspector General to learn more about the diversity problem at CFPB and how best to address it. While the findings confirm anecdotal suspicions, I am pleased to see that the CFPB has agreed with every recommendation made by the Inspector General and has already begun taking significant steps to address diversity and inclusion issues within its ranks. But our concerns about diversity in the federal government do not stop at the CFPB. In the coming months, I will be releasing a detailed analysis of the diversity and inclusion practices of all the federal financial regulators. Unlike our Republican colleagues, who have refused to hold hearings on diversity issues facing any other regulator, Democrats support women and minorities at all of our federal agencies – not just the one created by Dodd-Frank.”
