Committee Democrats At Work: Rep. Dean Introduces Bill to Provide Relief to Student Loan Borrowers

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As the nation endures the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Committee Democrats led by Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, have released the Financial Protections and Assistance for America’s Consumers, States, Businesses, and Vulnerable Populations Act (H.R. 6321), legislation to provide a comprehensive stimulus and public policy response to the coronavirus pandemic.

This legislation executes the comprehensive plan released by Chairwoman Waters and Committee Democrats last week.

H.R. 6321 includes provisions to protect consumers, renters, homeowners, and people experiencing homelessness, including a bill from Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (D-PA) to require the government to make student loan payments during the pandemic and the following six months, as well as forgive up to $10,000 of student loan debt for each borrower.

Representative Dean’s bill and numerous other provisions from H.R. 6321 are part of the Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act, House Democrats’ phase three coronavirus response bill that injects more than $2.5 trillion into the American economy. Chairwoman Waters is a cosponsor of the Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act. She and Financial Services Committee Members are continuing their efforts to ensure their critical legislation is included in the ongoing legislative response to the coronavirus crisis.

See below for what Congresswoman Dean had to say about her critical legislation and click here here for additional details on the entire legislative package released by Chairwoman Waters and Committee Democrats in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We must support robust and timely solutions to the economic hardships of this pandemic, and this legislation gives immediate relief to student borrowers, ensuring that they do not have to worry about falling behind on their student loans or harming their credit score,” said Representative Dean. “I look forward to working with our leadership as we continue to find ways to support people and workers through this difficult time.”
