Waters Statement on Trump’s Withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Deal

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, in response to the Trump Administration’s announcement that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services, made the following statement:

“President Trump’s announcement today that he is withdrawing the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal—and imposing the highest level of sanctions—will undermine U.S. national security and global stability. To date, the Iran accord has been effective in blocking Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon. Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the deal will allow Iran to pursue a nuclear weapons program—unconstrained, without UN inspectors, and without any recourse to stop them short of a U.S-led war and occupation.

“This reckless action will alienate our allies, trigger a long-term isolation of America as a diplomatic power, and likely put the United States on a path of escalation with Iran. And there is an obvious link here to Trump’s so-called diplomacy with North Korea. The Administration’s ability to pursue a credible diplomatic path with respect to Kim Jong-un’s nuclear program will be seriously undermined if North Korea and our allies believe the U.S. can’t be trusted to stand by its international commitments. Trump's unilateralism now will make forging a common front against Iran and other threats to U.S. national security much more difficult in the future.”
