Waters Slams Carson’s Outrageous Proposal to Increase Rents for Low-Income Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, in response to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson’s proposal to limit federal housing assistance and impose additional burdens on our nation’s most vulnerable populations, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services, made the following statement:

“Secretary Carson’s proposal to impose work requirements, rent increases and other burdens for America’s low-income families is reprehensible.

“It’s no secret that one of the greatest barriers to economic prosperity is the lack of decent, affordable housing and this proposal would only make it more difficult for hardworking Americans to achieve financial security or even meet their basic needs like food and medical expenses.

“Moreover, requiring low-income families to pay increased rents would lead to increased eviction rates and homelessness in this country.

“This heartless and misguided proposal makes it painfully clear that our nation’s most vulnerable populations – including seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and families with children – are not a priority to this Administration and I call on my colleagues in Congress to oppose this harmful plan.”
